Mechanical activation of heterogeneous exothermic reactions in powder mixtures

A. S. Rogachev

Institute of Structural Macrokinetics and Materials Science, Russian Academy of Sciences
Abstract: The review concerns the results of recent experimental, theoretical and applied studies on mechanical activation of reactive powder compositions and self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of materials using activated mixtures. We discuss the influence of activation regimes on the combustion temperature and velocity, self-ignition temperature, activation energy of the reaction, as well as the microstructure and atomic structure of the reactive compositions. Particular attention is paid to revealing structural transformations that lead to an increase in the reactivity of powder mixtures. Examples of practical application of the processes reviewed are presented.
